Is Producing in New York City Really That Expensive?

People often assume producing in New York automatically means oversized budgets.
But after years working across productions in the city, I’ve learned that most costs come from not understanding how New York actually works operationally.

For Interrapidísimo’s Father’s Day campaign,a documentary-style film following a young Colombian magician building her life in New York, Green Loro Media led the NYC production unit while the broader film was produced in Colombia.

What made the project interesting was not scale.
It was navigation.

One of the scenes required a restaurant location in Dumbo. On paper, the neighborhood can feel financially intimidating for international productions, especially for teams coming from Latin America or Europe. But New York production is often about relationships, timing, and understanding how local businesses operate. Because we understood the territory, vendor dynamics, and how productions move through the area, we were able to negotiate a location structure that supported both the creative vision and the budget realistically.

The same happened with production involving a child actor.

Filming with minors in the United States comes with very specific production rules: scheduling limitations, permits, timing restrictions, labor regulations, and set conditions that directly affect how a production day is built. When those rules are not anticipated early, productions lose time very quickly. But when they are understood properly, they become part of the strategy itself.

That, to me, is what real production experience looks like.

Not simply fixing problems in the moment, but knowing the system well enough to build productions around it intelligently, protecting the creative quality while keeping expectations and budgets grounded in reality.

At Green Loro Media, we’ve built our production approach around that mentality: senior-level, boots-on-the-ground execution for international teams producing in New York City. Smaller structure, close oversight, local knowledge, and a real understanding of how to move through the city efficiently without overcomplicating the process.

Because New York does not always reward bigger productions.
It rewards productions that know how to move
